As part of the "Together for Environmental Governance" project to address and prevent forest fires in Honduras, two socialization workshops were held on September 25 and 26 in Juticalpa municipality, department of Olancho.

The working sessions in Juticalpa were held in response to the fact that this municipality is among the municipalities with the highest occurrence of forest fires at the national level, and their main purpose was to promote the necessary actions to establish and form the Interinstitutional Fire Operations Center (COIIF, for its acronym in Spanish) for this area.

COIIF is a coordinating entity integrated by institutions that face and attend forest fires in a specific geographic area. Its organization aims to extinguish, control, and eliminate forest fires through the concerted use of human resources, equipment and time in a safe and efficient manner.

The activity was developed in coordination and alliance with officials from the Institute of Forest Conservation and Development, Protected Areas and Wildlife (ICF, for its Spanish acronym) of the Central and Regional Office of Olancho, and personnel from the United States Forest Service in Honduras (USFS), with the participation of the Attorney General's Office, the Special Environmental Prosecutor of the Public Ministry, representatives of the Fire Department, the Armed Forces, the National Police, the Interior Secretariat, the Municipality of Juticalpa, and the PROLANCHO Foundation.

As a result of these workshops, a commitment was made to continue with the technical strengthening process to establish the COIIF in Juticalpa, through follow-up by the ICF and the support of WWF Mesoamerica.
