On September 11th and 12th, authorities, partners, and regional entities gathered in San José, Costa Rica, to attend the inauguration of the 'Sustainable Pacific' project, demonstrating their commitment to protecting the Great Central American Pacific Coastal Marine Ecosystem (PACA).

The "Sustainable Pacific" project aims to strengthen collaboration among the PACA region countries. It will be implemented over 4 years and is structured around three essential pillars:
  • Development of regional governance instruments: this seeks to promote a unified understanding of PACA's current situation.
  • On-the-Ground learning generation: this involves implementing pilot projects in the 7 countries, focusing on marine spatial planning, sustainable fisheries management, and cetacean conservation.
  • Dissemination of practical experiences: the goal here is to use the lessons learned as guidelines for future policies and actions.
The project has set ambitious goals that reflect its magnitude and scope. Over 4 million people are expected to benefit directly, and an indirect impact is estimated to reach more than 48 million. Additionally, improvements are anticipated in the management of over 180 million hectares of marine areas (an area equivalent to three times the territory of Central America), along with ensuring the sustainability of 82,000 tons of fishery products.

With the launch of the "Sustainable Pacific," the PACA region proactively addresses its challenges and opportunities, positioning itself as a benchmark in sustainable marine management.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) implements this initiative in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and it's financed by the Global Environment Fund (GEF).
