A recent study conducted by WWF Mesoamerica in the riparian areas of the Chamelecón River in Copán, Honduras, revealed that out of the 5,490 hectares mapped, 65% are highly impacted by liquid and solid waste contamination generated from homes, cultivated areas and cattle pastures.

The study also found that 35% of the remaining areas represent dense forest spaces or patches with trees that serve as wildlife movement sites, as well as buffers between large-scale crops and the river current.

From this research, WWF will be focused on working in partnership with allies to prevent contamination in the studied areas, as well as to ensure the conservation of forest cover sites of importance to nearby ecosystems and communities.
