On April 23 and 24, WWF Mesoamerica together with the Belize National Climate Change Office and the Pew Charitable Trust held a virtual workshop on the state of the science related to Belize’s blue carbon ecosystems.

More than 70 participants from different organizations attended the workshop, making this a positive example of online solutions to continue our conservation work during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown situation.

The workshop was carried out to meet two objectives.  The first one was aimed at developing an understanding of Belize government’s blue carbon aspirations (to ensure that the science to be built can sufficiently input into the NDC drafting process).  The second objective was to obtain more information on the state of science related to Belize’s blue carbon ecosystems (mangroves & seagrass).

Through this process, the desired goals were achieved.  Furthermore, it also enabled the conditions to obtain additional inputs that were not originally considered, from the discussion and exchange of information that this format allowed to have.

Some outputs derived from this workshop include the institutionalization of the Blue Carbon project that WWF is conducting together with the Pew Charitable Trust, within the government as a feedback mechanism for the NDC revision. An analysis report on current and proposed policies to support blue carbon framework for Belize, including gaps will also be carried out.
