As a result from the agreement made between the World Wildlife Fund and the Hondurean Sugar Producers Association (APAH), both entities presented the “Sustainable Guiding Principles” guidebook.

The purpose of this guidebook is to establish sustainable principles and criterio for the harvesting and production of sugarcane in Honduras, which allows self-managing the different processes within the sugarcane sector in an environmentally-friendly way.

The guide will offer sugarcane mills, guidelines based on national and international guidelines which allow the identification and implementation of measures that increase their performance level under a sustainable platform.  Thus, it will promote an efficient use of resources within the sugarcane production sector in Honduras, without affecting productivity, so that their processes are conducted in balance with the environment and the society. The guide will also facilitate an auto-consultation procedure to implement sustainable practices within the sector’s operations to be measured under national and international standards.

The creation of this guide meets two of WWF’s global conservation goals: sustainable food production and freshwater conservation and it is also adapted to APAH’s Sector Sustainable Policy, who expressed to be glad to join efforts with a world-known organization like WWF.

The World Sustainable Standard, BPNSUCRO, was taken as a reference for the creation of this guide.  The purpose of BONSUCRO is to reduce the environmental and social impacts of the sugarcane production practices and is directly linked to the sustainable guiding principles adopted by the sugarcane production sector.

This allows the sugarcane industry to identify the sustainable guiding principles and develop streamlines and indicators for its autoregulation strategy in order to improve and generate progress towards reaching sustainable goals.

Gerardo J. Guillen, APAH’s Executive Director, expressed: “the agreement that was signed during 2018 between APAH and WWF has had great results, which has motivated us to renew this agreement to keep promoting the sustainable development and continuous improvement of our sector.  We work hard for the Honduras that we all want and we aim for that.”
