Climate change poses a fundamental threat to everything we love. Melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and new and more frequent weather extremes will leave no continent untouched. Impacts are already being felt by many communities and ecosystems worldwide. Water supplies are shrinking, crop yields are dropping, forests are burning, and our oceans are becoming more acidic. This has huge implications for our livelihoods and human security.
Mesoamerica is considered to be one of the most vulnerable regions to the effects of climate change in the world. Economic sectors like tourism and fisheries support the livelihoods of more than two million people in the Mesoamerican Reef region alone – a region highly vulnerable to hurricanes, coral bleaching, and storm surge. Similarly, changing weather patterns – particularly rainfall intensity – has led to numerous mudslides in the interior, closing down highways, destroying villages and wiping out local farm production.
Over the past few years WWF contributed to the development of Belize’s Climate Change Strategy, Policy and Action Plan, and has supported the government of Guatemala with the basis to build a Low-Emission Development Strategy for the country. We will continue our climate action support in Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.
